There’s this term that I heard a while back:
It’s when you first meet someone and aren’t too wowed by their physical attractiveness, but then over time as you spend more time with them, you eventually start to see just how beautiful they are. From then on, every time you see them it’s baffling how you didn’t find them attractive at first.
I like to think of presence as the “sneaky hot” concept of poker.
It’s not gonna knock your socks off when you first hear of it.
The idea of mastering cold 4betting ranges and check-shoving rivers with missed draws––that’s some sexy stuff there.
Or maybe it’s the shiny new book on habits everyone is reading.
Or how you’re gonna run 6 miles a day with no shoes on like David Goggins.
All that stuff sounds cool at first.
But in the end, they don’t give you what you really need. They don’t turn you into the person who is going to be able to execute at high levels day in, day out, hand after hand.
Executing with consistency––sneaky hot.
But you can’t see that until you’ve gone through all the other stuff so many times, and finally learned that it’s not gonna stack.
Eventually, you figure out what matters most:
The ability to lock in, relax, and have a great time playing your best poker.
That’s what presence will give you.
And that’s why I do what I do.
Because I think it’s the single most important trait that a good player needs in order to become a great performer who brings in the cash year after year.
