There’s this thing we all do:
Get these ideas in our heads, believe them to be completely true even though we’re not 100% sure of it, and then create entire strategies and approaches to live our lives assuming these thoughts were true.
“This person doesn’t like me”
“I’m not who they’re looking for to fill that promotion”
Or everyone’s favorite in poker:
“He’s coming after me, I need to fight back”
All of these thoughts are what are known as projection––they may or may not be true.
Sometimes they are very close to being completely true, oftentimes they may even be 99.99% true.
But they are not verified as 100% true.
And so we are doing ourselves a huge disservice by living our lives as if they are.
When you allow yourself to live your life according to the 99% truth, eventually you’ll allow yourself to do the same with the 95% truth, then 90, then 80, then 70, and so on, until you’re a person who just kind of runs with any thought that pops through your mind and makes decisions that you later regret.
The way out of this:
To have a system that allows you to understand what exactly about your experience is 100% true, and become skilled at recognizing everything else for what it is––a thought going through your mind.
And so you can live your life according to how true things actually are.
And that gives you a solid base to make choices you’ll be happy with.
So until next week, spend a few minutes at a time sitting with this idea––it’s a gamechanger.
