Play Drunk, Study Sober

Metaphorically speaking of course.

Put your shot glass down, poker-town-drunks DGAF and Sean Snyder haven’t turned me full Dark Side yet.

Earlier this week I had high stakes mixed-game pro Melissa Burr on the pod and she dropped a MOAGB (Mother of All Greatness Bombs) right on your favorite podcast host’s cranium. She actually dropped several greatness bombs (So don’t you even THINK about skipping that episode) but this one was so clever I couldn’t keep it to myself.

She told me that when there’s a “live one” in her game she makes sure to pay very close attention...

Because even though they make tons of blunders and punt off stacks more fiercely than Ray Guy, they also pull off accidental wizardry she never would have thought of.

And when they land a Merlin-like lightning bolt directly to the chest of their opponents, she steals it and puts it into her personal spell book.

You should be doing the same thing in your games.

As a matter of fact, occasionally you should just be the madman and get completely out of line.

I once interviewed world-class author V.E. Schwab and asked her about her writing process. She told me the most important part was getting the first draft on the page.

“It’s going to be horrible but that doesn’t matter,” she said. “Your first draft is the sand in which you build your sandcastle.”

Poker is the same. Most wannabes just read a book and go on nit lockdown mode from the jump.

They’re sitting in a clump of dirt trying to figure out how to build their sandcastles from Day 1.

There’s no sand, Pigpen! Now you’re just filthy and no one wants to talk to you.

Is it even surprising most of them end up eating buckets of mud year after year before they head home with bad tastes in their mouths?

So when I tell you to play drunk, I mean you ought to sometimes play with reckless abandon. You should push your creativity and aggression to the limit without caring about the results.

Then, in your sober study sessions, you reflect what worked and didn't work when you were a lunatic.

If you never play the part of a madman, how can you hope to understand one?

Madmen are my favorite type of poker player to coach. They’ve already done the hard work of filling their sand box to the brim with glittering white sand. They could care less about making a mistake and looking silly, they just want to learn and grow.

My job as coach is to simply help them build their sandcastle and get them to stop throwing sand into the wind.

So if you’re reading this with a dirt-like taste in your mouth or constantly have sand in your eyes and need an adult to help ya out, head to https://chasingpokergreatness.com/coaching and set up a coaching session.
